Julia Montauk is the daughter of the serial killer Robert Montauk and his missing (presumed killed) wife Linette. She first appears in MAG 9 where she has given her statement about her father's actions and motivations for the murders he committed when she was a girl.

Because Julia has been stalked for decades by The Dark, she maintained a terror of darkness well into adulthood. She did not overcome her fear of the dark until aligning with The Hunt, after which she partnered with Trevor Herbert to hunt monsters.

Description[]

As an adult, Julia is described as being "tall and lean, with close-cropped hair and a scar over her right eye".[1] She dresses nondescript, in hard-wearing denim and old leather.[2] She carries a large canvas bag for at least some of her work.

History[]

Childhood[]

Julia had a relatively happy and normal childhood until her mother, Linette, went missing when Julia was around 7 years old. In MAG 143, Manuela Dominguez reveals that Linette was a member of The People's Church of the Divine Host, and Maxwell Rayner "silenced" her when she tried to leave the cult.

Robert Montauk subsequently became a serial killer on behalf of Rayner in the hopes of banishing a beast affiliated with the Dark and saving Linette. Julia was unaware of this secret and considered him a generally good father. One night in Spring 1995, the beast terrorized and chased 12-year-old Julia. In a panic, Julia dialled emergency services and then burst into the shed to find her father performing a ritual that concluded with him stabbing the heart in his hand. Robert then apologised to Julia and fled.

According to one of the guards in Wakefield Prison, Julia was not allowed to see her father as a minor, although there are no details on who looked after her until she came of age. Upon turning 18, she started visiting her father, who lied and assured her being imprisoned was not so bad. They pretended to have a normal father-daughter relationship as if Robert were not incarcerated.

Julia mentions in MAG 9, when she was 19 or so, that she had to attend compulsory counselling until recently.

2010 to Present[]

Julia maintained a fear of the dark, due to her experiences as a child, through her adulthood. In an attempt to combat her fear, she got a job working as a night security guard for an office building in Manchester. In July 2010, a company called DKN, affiliated with The People's Church of the Divine Host, was conducting a ritual in the building. Julia met Trevor Herbert, who was there to combat the cultists. When Julia fell into a deep pool of black water in a conference room, Trevor reached in and helped her pull herself out. A moment later an office worker named Darvish attacked Trevor, and when Julia saw Darvish's tattoo of a hand with a closed eye on it, she grabbed Trevor's fallen pocketknife and stabbed Darvish. Julia and Trevor immediately paired up, stabbed the remaining (collapsed) cultists, and then left together.[3]

Julia and Trevor have travelled together, hunting monsters, ever since. Having aligned with the Hunt, Julia has overcome her fear of the dark. Although Trevor is a competent solo hunter and teases Julia (which she has no problem returning), he also seems to enjoy deferring to her judgement and preferences in many cases.

The duo was responsible for burning down Ivy Meadows Care Home in July 2011.[1] When Trevor tackled mortician Nicole Baxter, Julia instructed him to leave her alone. She later disagreed with Trevor's opinion that they should tell Nicole what was happening, saying that, in this case, running away was a better defence than knowledge.

Sometime after 2014, Trevor and Julia obtained the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead, which contains the spirit of Gerard Keay, and used him as a monster manual to help them in their hunts. [4]

A few years prior to 2017, Trevor and Julia illegally travelled to America in search of a wolfman in the Pacific Crest Trail. Although they never found their wolfman, they did find plenty of other things that needed killing. They are now trapped there due to the legal entanglements of trying to leave via plane, plus Julia's refusal to spend weeks on a boat. However, they do not seem terribly sad about being stuck, especially upon learning about The Stranger's impending ritual in the U.K.

Season Three[]

Julia reappears several years later (June 2017) in MAG 107 when she and Trevor Herbert kidnap John during an encounter with "Officer Max Mustermann." Julia drives with Jonathan in the passenger's seat, while Trevor hides in the boot of the car and incapacitates the monster when it pulls Julia over.

Julia later gives a second statement (with input from Trevor) in MAG 109, giving details about how the pair first met in July 2010 and how they started working together, and their travel to America. She also mentions that although killing things does not provide a paycheck, "the odd bit of robbery and trespass" does not faze them. At the end of this statement, she and Trevor release John to return to England. They allow John access to the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead, and he steals Gerard's page.[4]

Season Four[]

In MAG 153, Julia and Trevor show up at the Archives looking to retrieve Gerard's page from John. Upon learning that he burned the page, they are angry and plan to kill John, but are interrupted by the arrival of Daisy. In MAG 158, they return, implied to be trying to kill John, but are interrupted by Daisy, who has just given into the Hunt. The recording cuts out after a gunshot is heard.

Daisy kills Julia about a week later. They have been stalking each other through the tunnels beneath the city and Daisy tears out her throat after cornering her in an old subway access. Trevor finds her body three hours later.

Recurring Nightmares[]

Julia had nightmares of her mother and the dark in general since childhood. Since giving her statement in MAG 109, she now shared a recurring dream with Trevor in which the two of them creep through a newer versioned of the dark building in Manchester, an alert hunger on their faces, and try to stalk and catch the darkness before it does the same to them.

Trivia[]

  • Julia's last name is spelled "Montork" in the episode description of MAG 9. This appears to be a misspelling as it is spelled "Montauk" in all other official instances.
